Bliss Survey – shortage of neo natal nurses puts babies lives at risk

Cuts to frontline nursing staff are putting the lives of England’s sickest babies at risk. A Bliss survey carried out in July 2011 of all England’s neonatal units uncovered worrying findings including the headline that more than half of units are not meeting NHS high quality standards for Neonatal services – click here for the survey results and what you can do to make your voice heard.

After 89 long bum numbing hours in the saddle Rob McIvor completed the infamous Paris-Brest-Paris bike race in aid of Baby Isaac Fund.

Rob has raised a massive £5600 which takes our grand total so far to over £16000!

After 89 long bum numbing hours in the saddle Rob McIvor completed the infamous Paris-Brest-Paris bike race in aid of Baby Isaac Fund.

Rob has raised a massive £5600 towards vital keyhole surgery equipment for babies at St George’s Hospital.

We are delighted to announce that Baby Isaac Fund supporter, Rob McIvor has qualified for this years Paris-Brest-Paris bike race. The event is a gruelling 1200km course which must be completed within 90 hours. We are thrilled that Rob has decided to donate all funds raised to Baby Isaac Fund.

Baby Isaac Fund has two main objectives: the first is to provide neo-natal surgeons with much needed new equipment they can use to help poorly babies with surgical problems. You can imagine how hard it is for Neo-Natal units and the surgeons within them to secure funding for new costly equipment in today’s climate.

The second objective is to fund research to find ways of helping the estimated 3000 babies who are born every year needing surgery. Can any insight be gained by looking more closely at certain conditions, are there medical centres of excellence that can share expertise, is there scope for new surgical techniques etc etc are all potential examples.

Although Baby Isaac Fund has been set up to help neo-natal units across the country, we are initially looking to focus our fundraising efforts on St George’s Hospital in Tooting, where Isaac received all his care. The surgeons, doctors and nurses at St George’s worked so hard to help Isaac, it would be fantastic to give something back.
